Background, Mission and Programs

GNP+NA is the North American affiliate of the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+). The mission of GNP+NA is to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS by creating and sustaining an active North American network of PLWHA’s working regionally to address the global pandemic. GNP+NA endorses the vision of GNP+ to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS by lobbying, linking and sharing.

GNP+NA operates a unique bilateral organization providing North American PLWHA’s with opportunities to network, organize, and become part of a global movement of PLWHA’s.

GNP+ is a global network for and by people with HIV/AIDS. The central secretariat of the network is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands and consists of a board of twelve members representing the various international regions: North America, Latin America, Caribbean, Asia/Pacific, Africa, and Europe.

The overall aim of GNP+ is achieved by helping to build the capacity of people with HIV/AIDS on the global, regional and national level. The goal of GNP+ is to create, organize and support a base for the global network by:

Lobbying for inclusion of people living with HIV/AIDS and their interests
Linking people living with HIV/AIDS through local, regional and global meetings and conferences
Sharing knowledge and building capacity locally, regionally and globally

GNP+NA is working to implement a series of activities to impact public policy-making by informing and mobilizing the HIV+ community around three key issues:

  • Access to care and treatment;

  • Elimination of discrimination and stigma, especially in the area of travel and immigration restrictions; and

  • Implementation of the Greater Involvement of People living with HIV/AIDS (GIPA) Principle, the globally recognized belief that HIV+ people must have meaningful involvement in every level of decision-making that impacts their lives.

GNP+NA is governed by a diverse Board of Directors comprised equally of representatives of the United States and Canada. One director from each country represents GNP+NA on the GNP+Global Board.
